Summary

The August 1953 issue of Fūzoku Sōshi is a particularly revealing example of the magazine’s effort to gather many different forms of erotic abnormality into a single visual and literary world. Its 153 printed pages move restlessly among punishment history, bondage illustration, crime fiction, medicalized sexuality, confession, prison narrative, same-sex desire, fetish correspondence, and purported documentary material. Rather than separating these subjects into tidy categories, the magazine places them beside one another so that historical torture, modern seme, sensational journalism, fantasy, and reader testimony continually reinterpret each other. The issue shows Fūzoku Sōshi functioning not simply as an erotic magazine, but as an engine for assembling an emerging SM culture from heterogeneous materials.
The opening pages establish punishment as both historical subject and erotic spectacle. A “Fūzoku Art Museum” portfolio reproduces scenes of Western corporal punishment, execution, exposure, drowning, and bodily mutilation. These images are nominally presented as historical or ethnographic curiosities, but their placement at the front of an erotic magazine changes how they are read. The punished body becomes a visual object to be studied, compared, and enjoyed. The sequence is followed by a jungle fantasy in which a restrained woman is threatened by a giant ape, then by stylized illustrations of women tied in different poses. The transition is important: the issue moves almost seamlessly from historical punishment to fantasy peril to aestheticized bondage. What begins as documentary cruelty becomes seme through repetition and editorial framing.
Kita Reiko’s contribution is central to this transformation. Her illustrated pages present restrained women as variations in posture, exposure, balance, and bodily tension rather than as figures belonging to a single continuous story. This portfolio structure is characteristic of Kita’s work. It turns seme into a visual repertoire that can be learned comparatively. One body is suspended, another compressed, another opened or bent into a theatrical pose. The viewer is invited to examine how different arrangements change the emotional and erotic meaning of restraint. The images do not merely illustrate punishment. They help establish bondage as an artistic system of line, pressure, gesture, and display.
The issue’s fiction repeatedly uses crime, danger, and deception as narrative routes into erotic coercion. “The Fatal Pleasure of Cosmetics” places desire within the modern spaces of beauty culture and commercial femininity, while “The Overturned Street” combines urban crime, medical threat, intoxication, and sexual vulnerability. These stories show how the magazine borrowed plots from mystery and pulp fiction in order to create situations in which bodies could be inspected, captured, drugged, restrained, or placed under another person’s control. The criminal plot acts as an alibi for looking. Readers can encounter erotic helplessness while the story formally presents itself as danger, investigation, or moral scandal.
A parallel strand of the issue treats punishment as knowledge. “Reflections on Western Torture” surveys European methods of execution and bodily control, while the illustrated history of the torture of Christian women in Japan organizes persecution into a series of techniques and tableaux. These articles occupy an unstable position between antiquarian curiosity and erotic catalogue. Their historical claims offer distance and legitimacy, but their visual emphasis repeatedly returns attention to the exposed, bound, suspended, or suffering body. For modern readers, they show how early SM publishing could inherit a language of punishment without yet fully separating scholarship from fantasy.
The magazine also moves from external spectacle toward imagined sensation. “The Rope and Whip That Bit into Her” emphasizes the tactile effects of restraint and striking, while “Expressions of a Woman Being Tormented” treats the female face and body as evidence to be interpreted. Fear, exhaustion, pain, arousal, resistance, and surrender become visual signs that the reader is invited to decode. This is one of the issue’s most important conceptual features. The bound woman is not only an object in a scene. She is presented as a problem of interiority: what does she feel, and how can that feeling be read from her body? The answer remains ethically unstable because the magazine often lets artists, narrators, and spectators assign meaning to the woman’s response.
The long feature “The Town of Masochists” extends this logic from individual bodies to an imagined social world. Masochistic desire becomes the organizing principle of a community, with humiliation, enslavement, fetish costume, and ritualized submission treated as social customs rather than isolated pathology. The premise is fantastical, but historically significant. It suggests that the magazine’s readers were beginning to imagine not only individual sadists and masochists, but entire environments in which their desires might be recognized and structured. The fantasy of a town devoted to masochism anticipates the reader communities and erotic publics that magazines such as Fūzoku Sōshi and Kitan Club were themselves helping to create.
The issue’s same-sex material further broadens that public. “Berlin Night Tales” presents postwar Berlin as a landscape of cabaret, prostitution, homosexuality, and sexual experimentation. Later pieces include a male prison or guardhouse narrative, material on communal toilets, and “Lesbos Correspondence.” These features do not all approach homosexuality in the same way. Some rely on sensationalism or voyeurism, while others create a space in which readers can recognize shared desires and imagine contact with one another. Their presence beside bondage, torture history, and heterosexual coercive fantasy demonstrates that the magazine had not yet narrowed itself into a single-definition SM publication. It served as a meeting place for multiple stigmatized erotic interests.
The autobiographical and confessional pieces add another layer of uncertainty. “The Six Women I Tormented,” prison memoirs, and fetish accounts involving wooden horses, pulleys, whipping, and restraint are framed as records or experiences rather than straightforward fiction. Readers are left to decide how much is confession, exaggeration, editorial construction, or invention. That ambiguity is not a flaw in the magazine’s design. It is part of its attraction. By refusing to clarify where fact ends and fantasy begins, Fūzoku Sōshi allows private desire to appear as testimony while preserving the protective veil of fiction.
The August 1953 issue is therefore especially useful for understanding the moment when early Japanese SM culture was becoming more systematic but had not yet become conceptually tidy. Rope, whipping, torture, fetishism, homosexuality, crime, prison life, historical punishment, and reader correspondence remain entangled. The magazine repeatedly classifies bodies and techniques, yet it also delights in unstable identities and uncertain sources. Historical punishments become erotic images; confessions become entertainment; illustrations become taxonomies; and stories become invitations to imagine compatible worlds.
For readers of Kinbaku Today, the issue offers a valuable reminder that kinbaku did not emerge from a pure, self-contained rope tradition. It developed within a crowded print ecology of punishment art, pulp crime, medical discourse, queer correspondence, theatrical fantasy, and commercial erotic illustration. The pages are unruly, sometimes troubling, and often ethically contradictory. That unruliness is precisely what makes them historically important. Fūzoku Sōshi was not merely reflecting an established SM culture. Through issues like this one, it was teaching readers how to see disparate images and desires as parts of the same emerging field.
