Summary

The December 1953 issue of Fūzoku Sōshi closes the year with one of the magazine’s richest combinations of historical punishment, bondage photography, artistic classification, sexual psychology, pathological case history, translated sadistic fiction, and Japanese seme. Across its pages, the issue repeatedly asks how torment becomes pleasure, how the bound body can be organized as an image, and how abnormal desire might be studied as both personal disposition and cultural phenomenon.
The cover replaces November’s open landscape with an enclosed interior populated by skeletal, masked creatures. The figures drink, gamble, play music, handle objects, and gather around a treasure chest. The scene resembles a demonic club or secret society. Its relevance to the magazine lies in its transformation of deviance into community. The monsters are not isolated. They inhabit a shared room with rituals, amusements, and social roles, an uncanny reflection of the magazine’s own promise to gather readers with stigmatized interests.
A color illustration on PDF page 3 depicts a woman tightly bound around the torso and thighs, her body arched over a cylindrical support. Rope, posture, and painted markings transform her into a carefully designed object. The plate is signed by Kitahara and announces the issue’s focus on composition as much as punishment.
Nakagawa Ayako’s portfolio “The Woman Exhausted of Strength” presents women tied to trees, posts, beams, and architectural supports. The bodies hang, twist, or collapse against the structures that hold them. The title emphasizes not the moment of capture but the aftermath of resistance. These women have reached the point where strength fails and posture is determined almost entirely by rope and gravity.
The issue then turns explicitly toward historical precedent. A feature introduced by Itō Seiu reproduces Meiji-period punishment imagery, including women suspended, bound, beaten, and subjected to public or institutional ordeal. The images demonstrate the visual archive from which postwar seme could borrow. Yet their placement in an erotic magazine changes their function. Historical cruelty becomes a sourcebook of positions, devices, and dramatic situations.
Kita Reiko’s “Six States of the Victim” follows. The six figures are tied, folded, inverted, stretched, or restrained against furniture and architectural elements. The title is revealing. These are not six chapters of a narrative but six “states,” suggesting that victimhood can be classified visually. Kita turns helplessness into a repertoire of forms.
A photographic feature titled “The Structure of Humiliation,” directed or supervised by Itō Seiu, presents a woman restrained and handled within Japanese interiors. The sequence includes floor bondage, chair restraint, suspension, and control by an older male figure. The term “structure” is especially significant. Humiliation is treated as something built from physical elements: rope, costume, posture, gaze, furniture, and the unequal positions of participants.
Kita Reiko’s 悦虐図, Etsugyaku-zu, or “Pictures of Ecstatic Cruelty,” appears among the opening illustrations. The two women are constrained by boards and furniture-like structures, with the compositions emphasizing inversion, compression, exposure, and bodily line. The visible tormentor is absent. Cruelty appears to reside within the arrangement itself. By December, etsugyaku is functioning not merely as a phrase but almost as the name of a visual genre.
The issue’s first major article, “Research Notes on the Wooden Horse,” examines a traditional punishment device through historical description, personal experimentation, and illustration. Women are shown positioned over wooden structures with their legs separated and bodies immobilized. Like other historical features in the magazine, the article shifts between antiquarian research and erotic reconstruction. The past provides the apparatus, while the magazine supplies the modern erotic gaze.
One of the issue’s most conceptually important features is “The Pleasure of Binding and the Pleasure of Being Bound.” It attempts to divide rope experience into complementary active and receptive positions. The binder experiences control, technique, visual satisfaction, and the power to shape another body. The bound subject experiences pressure, helplessness, concentration, and altered bodily awareness. This pairing moves beyond the solitary sadist by imagining bondage as an exchange between distinct but compatible desires.
The article remains far from a contemporary language of negotiated consent, and bodily response is frequently interpreted from outside. Nevertheless, it represents an important conceptual shift. Rope is not defined solely through the person who imposes it. The experience of the bound person becomes necessary to the meaning of the scene.
A confessional story titled “The Room of the Beast” explores animality, confinement, and compulsive desire through a first-person voice. Like many Fūzoku Sōshi narratives, it uses confession to suspend the distinction between fiction and testimony. The narrator appears to document an abnormal experience while the illustrations and dramatic structure push the material toward fantasy.
The continued story “Dream Demon” carries forward the previous issue’s nightmare logic. A woman is bound and assaulted within spaces whose reality remains uncertain. Dreams allow hidden desire to appear as an external force. The protagonist can be overwhelmed by events without having consciously chosen them, while the reader receives an erotic narrative protected by the alibi of nightmare.
The pseudo-medical article “The Sexual Desire of Filth-Fetishism” examines attraction to dirt, waste, smell, and contamination. It invokes abnormal psychology and pathology, but its detailed descriptions and grotesque illustrations also cater to erotic curiosity. The article demonstrates how diagnosis could serve as a form of publication. By explaining a fetish, the magazine simultaneously names it, displays it, and tells readers that others share it.
“The Hypnotic Therapist” uses medical authority and altered consciousness as mechanisms of control. Hypnosis, like intoxication and dreams, removes ordinary agency while preserving bodily response. The therapist occupies a position of institutional legitimacy, allowing erotic domination to masquerade as treatment. This is one of the issue’s clearest examples of authority converting desire into procedure.
A sexological feature asks “What Kind of Man Is a Masochist?” It attempts to classify male masochism through personality, behavior, fantasy, occupation, and sexual response. Although diagnostic in tone, its importance lies in treating masochism as a recognizable type of person. The question is no longer merely what masochists do, but who they are, how they can be identified, and what relationships might correspond to their desires.
The story “The Knife Man” brings cutting, blood, danger, and erotic compulsion together. Sharp instruments introduce a different form of intensity from rope. Whereas bondage organizes and contains the body, the knife threatens to breach it. The story therefore tests the outer boundary of seme, where erotic control approaches physical destruction.
The historical punishment series continues with “Hell of Fire Punishment.” Women are bound and exposed to flames within heavily illustrated historical scenes. Fire provides spectacle, bodily danger, religious association, and visual movement. The article presents itself as punishment history, but the repeated images of bound women amid swirling flames clearly participate in the magazine’s erotic visual culture.
A later feature asks what kind of murder an abnormal sexual person might commit. It combines criminology, sexual pathology, sensational crime, and illustrated violence. Such pieces reveal the double bind of early SM publishing. Abnormal desire could be explained and made socially visible, but it remained closely linked to criminality and danger.
The December issue also includes another major Kita Reiko calendar image, “Reiko’s Twelve Months: Fog.” A woman is tied upright against a tree or post within a dark, obscured landscape. Fog isolates the figure and erases the surrounding world. The environment becomes an instrument of psychological restraint: the bound woman cannot see beyond the immediate scene, and the reader encounters her as a solitary shape emerging from darkness.
Taken together, the issue’s Kita Reiko features form a compact theory of her work. “Six States of the Victim” classifies bodily subjection. “Pictures of Ecstatic Cruelty” abstracts torment into composition. “Fog” embeds restraint within seasonal atmosphere. These are three different ways of transforming seme into visual art: taxonomy, concept, and environment.
For readers of Kinbaku Today, the December issue is among the most important surviving issues because it places Itō Seiu and Kita Reiko in unusually close dialogue. Itō’s historical punishment research and staged photography supply techniques, apparatuses, and claims of precedent. Kita’s portfolios detach those forms from strict historical narration and reorganize them as modern erotic compositions. Between them appears “The Pleasure of Binding and the Pleasure of Being Bound,” a text that begins to articulate rope as a relation between complementary positions.
The issue therefore captures a decisive transformation. Punishment remains the inherited archive, but bondage is becoming an autonomous aesthetic and psychological field. Historical devices are researched, live bodies are photographed, victim positions are classified, pleasure is divided between binder and bound, and etsugyaku is presented as a named category of art. The machinery of early Japanese SM is fully visible, gears turning beneath the paper.
