Summary

The February 1954 issue of Fūzoku Sōshi offers a vivid snapshot of the magazine at the height of its early postwar development. By this point, it was no longer merely a general “curiosity” magazine that occasionally wandered into bondage or sadism. Its 164 printed pages bring together rope photography, erotic illustration, crime fiction, first-person confession, medicalized sexuality, lesbian and homosexual correspondence, fetish commentary, and serialized fantasies of coercion. The result is less a conventional magazine than a paper labyrinth in which art, pathology, fantasy, testimony, and sexual subculture continually bleed into one another.
The issue announces its priorities immediately. After a wintry illustrated cover, the opening color plate, “Beautiful Dog” (Utsukushiki Inu), depicts a woman collared, partially stripped, and held by chains. It is followed by a photographic portfolio of a woman in elaborate traditional costume bound in several positions. The sequence moves between staged theatricality and physical restraint: rope passes beneath ornate sleeves, around the torso, and across the legs, transforming the costume from a marker of refinement into part of the bondage apparatus. These images establish one of the issue’s central visual tensions, the collision between beauty, display, and degradation.
The illustrated front matter develops that tension through a remarkable variety of styles. Some drawings resemble pulp crime illustration, others evoke Western fetish art, and still others draw upon Japanese historical or theatrical settings. Women are tied to pillars, inverted, interrogated, whipped, threatened with implements, or displayed before grotesque male figures. The magazine does not present these images as belonging to a single coherent genre. They move freely among punishment, crime, erotic comedy, horror, fantasy, and seme. That instability is part of their historical importance. Fūzoku Sōshi was helping readers learn that these apparently different scenes could be understood as neighboring expressions within the same erotic field.
One substantial early story, beginning on printed page 26, is presented as a new “abnormal mystery” serial. Its combination of detective fiction, nocturnal atmosphere, sexual danger, and female vulnerability illustrates how crime provided a ready-made narrative alibi for erotic coercion. Elsewhere, stories of imprisonment, manipulation, assault, and bodily control use familiar pulp structures to create repeated opportunities for restraint and exposure. The magazine’s fiction does not merely add bondage to existing plots. Bondage often becomes the engine that moves those plots forward.
Several pieces are framed as memoirs, records, or confessions rather than conventional fiction. “Record of a Wandering Life in Bondage” begins on printed page 59, presenting erotic abnormality through autobiographical form. Another long piece, “The Fisherman’s Wife,” is introduced as a story of marital pleasure and abnormal desire. These confessional formats blur the boundary between fantasy and lived testimony. Readers are encouraged to wonder whether the events are invented, exaggerated, editorially reconstructed, or drawn from experience. That uncertainty gives the material much of its charge.
The issue also reflects the magazine’s fascination with bodily classification. Articles and stories focus on breasts, the abdomen, feet, restraint, medical symptoms, physical abnormalities, and specific techniques of control. “Breast Mania,” beginning on printed page 92, treats the breast as both fetish object and site of medicalized inquiry. “Symptoms,” beginning on page 98, organizes sexual and bodily irregularities into numbered categories. “Record of Abdominal Torture,” beginning on page 114, turns a particular region of the body into the center of an extended torment fantasy. Such pieces show the magazine constructing an erotic anatomy in which individual body parts could become distinct objects of obsession, study, and punishment.
For readers interested in Kita Reiko, one of the most important features appears on printed pages 120–121:

The two-page installment continues Kita’s recurring calendar series. In the first image, a seated woman in kimono is restrained and acted upon by a bespectacled man. In the second, a woman lies partially stripped while a man presses himself over her. The seasonal title “Plum” connects the scene to the beginning of spring, but the seasonal reference functions less as decoration than as a device for organizing seme into a recurring visual cycle. Like Itō Seiu’s Twelve Months of Strange Punishments, Kita’s series repeatedly joins bodily ordeal to the passage of the year. Here, however, historical punishment has been relocated into the intimate, serial, and explicitly erotic world of the postwar magazine.
The final third of the issue broadens its field further. “Mirror Demon Legend” combines supernatural folklore with the threatened female body. “Sodomia Correspondence,” beginning on printed page 137, provides a dedicated space for male same-sex readers and correspondents. A separate lesbian correspondence feature appears later in the issue, introduced as a secret salon for women. These columns are significant because they do more than describe homosexuality from the outside. They create named spaces in which readers are invited to address one another as participants in a shared, if dispersed and vulnerable, erotic public.
The issue’s back pages also contain advertisements, contests, reader notices, and tables of contents for recent issues. These pages reveal the magazine as a commercial and social network rather than a sealed literary object. Readers could submit manuscripts, enter prize competitions, order special publications, respond to correspondents, and follow recurring authors and series. The magazine repeatedly converted private desire into circulation: a fantasy became a story, a story became an illustration, an illustration provoked a letter, and the letter invited another reader to answer.
For contemporary readers of Kinbaku Today, the February 1954 issue is valuable not because it presents a clean or fully formed philosophy of kinbaku. It does the opposite. It shows rope culture before later historical narratives smoothed its rough edges. Bondage appears beside crime, medical fetishism, pulp fiction, same-sex correspondence, theatrical photography, pseudonymous female authority, and grotesque illustration. Consent and coercion are often unresolved. Art and exploitation remain entangled. Testimony and fabrication cannot always be separated.
That disorder is precisely what makes the issue so revealing. It captures a moment when postwar Japanese SM culture was still being assembled on the page. Fūzoku Sōshi did not simply record a world that already existed. Through repetition, juxtaposition, serialization, and correspondence, it taught its readers how to recognize one.
