Summary

The May 1961 issue of Gaho Fuzoku Kitan presents an unusually image-heavy mixture of staged kinbaku photography, erotic illustration, translated fetish material, sensational fiction, reader correspondence, and mail-order culture. A second photographic portfolio, “Poses Blooming in the Garden of Enchanting Beauty,” returns to subdued monochrome images of a single model in a Japanese interior. It is followed by “An Unusual Exhibition,” a group of erotic drawings ranging from reclining studies to more overtly sadistic fantasy scenes. The adjoining Nutrix Gallery reproduces Western fetish and punishment cartoons, making the magazine’s international borrowing particularly visible.

The later section includes the first installment of John Willie’s “The Surrender and Adventures of Gwendoline,” presented with Japanese explanatory text and reproductions of Willie’s fetish illustrations. This is followed by the illustrated crime and captivity story “The Beast in Black Glasses,” in which a woman is abducted, restrained, and threatened by a concealed assailant. “A Medical Study of Torment” adopts a mock-analytical tone to discuss restraint and bodily response, while the Readers’ Forum gathers letters, short contributions, personal reports, editorial replies, and notices that reveal an active community of readers exchanging fantasies and practical interests.

The closing pages are devoted to publication notices, book and magazine recommendations, mail-order listings, classified-style material, and the magazine’s agency department. This commercial and participatory back matter is integral to the issue’s identity: Gaho Fuzoku Kitan functions not only as an illustrated magazine but also as a network connecting readers, artists, collectors, imported fetish imagery, and vendors. Across the issue, restraint is treated simultaneously as spectacle, compositional technique, fictional danger, pseudoscientific subject, and shared subcultural language.
