This front section is important because it shows readers addressing one another through a shared body of references. They are no longer encountering sadism or bondage only as isolated abnormalities. They are discussing models, techniques, stories, terminology, and earlier contributors as members of an ongoing print community.
Several early pieces focus directly on the word nawa, or rope, and on what the term signifies. One column reflects on the character 縄 itself, while another considers the language used for tying and the distinction between restraint as ordinary action and bondage as erotic image. Rope here is not merely a prop. It has become a concept with its own history, aesthetic associations, and emotional charge.
The issue also displays a strong interest in media representation. A “film correspondence” column discusses bondage scenes appearing on television or in cinema, including how they are framed, abbreviated, censored, or misunderstood. This suggests that readers were increasingly alert to the circulation of SM imagery beyond specialist magazines. Kitan Club becomes a place where mainstream images are collected, interpreted, and absorbed back into the subculture.
A long and unusually revealing section begins with the feature “A Thousand Pieces of Pure Gold in One Spring Night,” presented as a conversation with Masuda Kiyoshi and his wife Miyuki. Photographs show the couple in a bar or social setting before the article moves into a detailed discussion of ropes, models, photography, artistic intent, and the relation between private practice and public representation. This is one of the issue’s clearest signs that SM had developed recognizable practitioners and personalities whose work could be discussed through interviews rather than only fictionalized.
The accompanying photographs include a woman tied across a chair-like wooden frame and another image of a more elaborate apparatus. The discussion appears to move between photography, modeling, technical construction, and personal experience. Rope is treated as craft, performance, visual composition, and lived relationship all at once.
The serialized “The Wife’s Nose Is Mine” shifts toward domestic comic-erotic fiction. Its first-person narrative uses marriage, bodily fixation, and teasing dialogue to explore fetishistic attention within ordinary life. The story’s tone is less gothic than earlier SM fiction. It is conversational, humorous, and psychologically intimate, showing how fetishism could be relocated from hidden chambers into marriage and everyday domesticity.
Another major contribution is “The Dramatic History of a Wounded Heart,” a serial by Saijō Shō. This long work is structured largely through dialogue and follows a psychologically unstable relationship involving desire, manipulation, emotional injury, criminality, and sexual dependence. Its scale matters. The magazine devotes dozens of pages to character development and emotional complexity rather than using bondage only as a brief climax. By 1966, SM fiction could sustain long-form psychological melodrama.
The issue contains several articles framed as personal testimony or reader-submitted experience. “The Red Candle of Abuse,” marked as a reader manuscript, is a sadistic short story by Fukuda Hisabumi. “Record of Playing with a Friend” recounts an intimate experience in a confessional voice. These first-person formats continue the magazine’s long practice of hovering between fiction, memoir, and editorially shaped testimony.
A notable translated or adapted feature, “Monkey Bird,” develops a story of domination and enslavement through a foreign setting. As in earlier decades, imported literature is used to widen the magazine’s erotic vocabulary. Western slavery, fetish costume, and coercive ritual are incorporated into Japanese SM reading culture.
The issue’s most substantial photographic material appears in the multipart “SM Camera Hunt” feature, titled “Continued: The Group of Cute Little Devils.” Across many pages, a woman is photographed in several restraints: upright bondage, chest harnesses, floor positions, arms fixed behind her, suspension-like arrangements, and rope around the torso and thighs. The text mixes staged dialogue, reactions from the model, commentary from the photographer, and descriptions of how the scene develops.
This sequence is historically important because it presents bondage not as an isolated finished image but as a process. The model comments, the photographer or rigger adjusts the rope, poses change, and the article narrates the progression. The camera becomes part of the scene’s structure. It does not simply record bondage after the fact; it helps produce the performance.
Later images in the same sequence show the woman lying on tatami, bent forward, tied upright, restrained against a wall or sliding door, and posed with chest and arm ties. The mixture of ordinary Japanese interior space and deliberate erotic staging is striking. The home becomes a photographic studio, and bondage is presented as an organized session involving time, conversation, technique, and repetition.
Toward the end of the issue, “Pleasurable SM Play in Disguise,” by Masuda Kiyoshi, uses photographs of costumed participants in masks and improvised outfits. The sequence blends humor, role play, bondage, physical domination, and theatrical exaggeration. One participant appears in a horned or goblin-like hood, while another wears a simple female disguise. The images are playful rather than solemn, revealing an important side of postwar SM culture that historical accounts often neglect: amateur performance, comedy, and domestic experimentation.
The final reader-experience feature, “Bewitched by the Rope,” presents a first-person account of becoming fascinated with bondage. It combines memory, discovery, magazines, photography, and participation, suggesting that rope desire often developed through accumulated images and encounters rather than through a single formative event. The article reads almost as a miniature history of subcultural initiation.
The issue also includes extensive queer and sexological material. Several columns discuss women readers, same-sex desire, male homosexuality, readers’ experiences, and the language through which abnormal desire is classified. These pieces retain the period’s medicalized and pathologizing vocabulary, but they also create sustained spaces in which stigmatized identities can be narrated in the first person.
One of the issue’s most ambitious historical pieces is “Ariadne,” described as an essay reconstructing a Greek myth. The article uses the myth of Ariadne, Theseus, the labyrinth, and the Minotaur to discuss ritual, sacrifice, sexuality, captivity, and ancient religion. The labyrinth becomes a powerful metaphor for hidden desire, while the thread of Ariadne offers a natural point of contact with the magazine’s larger fascination with rope, binding, and guidance through secret worlds.
For readers of Kinbaku Today, this August 1966 issue is especially valuable because it shows Kitan Club after the formative period. The magazine is no longer merely trying to establish that sadists, masochists, fetishists, and rope enthusiasts exist. It assumes their existence and turns toward conversation, technique, photographic process, personalities, reader response, historical interpretation, and serialized entertainment.
The issue therefore captures a mature SM print culture. Rope has become a technical practice, a photographic genre, a language of relationship, a source of humor, a commercial subject, and a marker of identity. The magazine functions simultaneously as school, salon, theater, archive, and letterbox.
